Our community continues to suffer from unacceptable levels of abuse, discrimination, violence and neglect:

* Poverty is a defining reality for too many Victorians with disability.

* Children with disability in schools continue to experience excessive use of violence, restraint and seclusion.

* Almost 1 in 2 people entering Australian prisons have chronic health problems or disability, highlighting the devastating consequences of exclusion, disadvantage and inadequate support.

These are not isolated issues. They are symptoms of a broader failure to recognise and uphold the rights, safety and dignity of people with disability.

Nothing is changing quickly enough. We need political leaders at every level of government to treat the safety and wellbeing of people with disability as a fundamental responsibility.

The personal experiences you share make this action more powerful. Candidates need to understand not only what we are asking for, but why these issues matter in people's everyday lives.

The disability community across Australia is in deep distress after the Commonwealth Government passed the NDIS Amendment Bill 2026, against the advice of Australia’s Human Rights Commissioners, disability advocacy organisations and the disabled community across the country.

For many people with disability, this is more than a debate about the NDIS. It is a question of whether governments will listen to us, respect our rights and ensure we have the support we need to live safely, with dignity and choice.

As Victoria approaches the 2026 election, we are asking candidates to make a clear commitment to the disability community.

Disabled People’s Organisations Victoria (DPOV), a collective of disability led organisations and groups across Victoria, have developed an election platform for the 2026 Victorian election, which outlines 6 key commitments for the next Victorian Government.

I am writing to invite you to make the DPOV Election Pledge: a commitment to uphold these six priorities if elected to government.

1.	Respect and engage with people with disability
Commit to meaningful and ongoing engagement with people with disability and our representative organisations on all matters that affect our lives.

2.	Close the gaps for people excluded from the NDIS
Consistent with the principle of no disadvantage, ensure no person with disability is left without the essential foundational, community and mainstream supports they need because they are ineligible for, or locked out of, the NDIS.

3.	Deliver on the Disability Royal Commission
Commit to developing and commencing a Disability Royal Commission implementation plan.

4.	Reform guardianship and decision-making legislation 
Reform Victoria’s guardianship and decision-making legislation to uphold the rights, will and preferences of people with disability.

5.	End Institutionalisation
Establish a clear roadmap to phase out congregate residential settings

6.	Make Public Transport Accessible

Commit to making Victorian’s public transport system genuinely accessible, so people with disability can travel independently and participate fully in community life.
This is a critical moment for Victorians with disability. The services and supports we rely on are undergoing significant change, and decisions made during the next term of government will have lasting consequences for our lives.

We are asking you to listen to disabled people, stand with our community and make a public commitment to these six priorities.
